Screen resolution on the backs of point and shoot cameras are pretty poor, which is why the image on the screen goes bad. The only way to get around this is to hook the camera up to a monitor, which is bigger and has better resolution.
I would avoid using digital zoom ( you can turn it off in the menu system) if you don’t need it. Digital zoom will definitely reduce the quality of your images.
This is somewhat normal. I don’t have that exact camera, but I have one like it. The camera does not take enough pixels to take a clear picture when you use the digital zoom. The optical zoom should not create a problem though. I’m not sure about the screen. Mine never gets grainy on the screen until I zoom in on the picture I just took. When I take the photo, the screen is always fine.
I would contact Canon and ask if you could exchange the camera or if they could fix it. I imagine they would since you just bought it.
